Nestled in-between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day is National Visit Your Relatives Day (May 18th, 2020). It’s a day when you reach out to relatives, near and far, to connect, catch up, and get to know each other.

Looking for a topic to discuss? Start with the obvious choice – learning about your family. This holiday is an opportunity to create your LIFELONG Family Story, one page at a time.

Here’s what you’ll need.

  • Paper, pencil/pen, and a box or binder to hold the pages you create.
  • Names of family members you’d like to interview or research for your LIFELONG Family Story.
    • Consider making this a family project and ask parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. to join you.
    • Make sure you include yourself on the list!
  • A list of information you may want to collect such as:
    • Birth (date, city, state, country)
    • Marriage (date, city, state, country)
    • Death (date, city, state, country)
    • Education (grade school, middle school, high school, college, technical school, etc.)
    • Profession, hobbies, passions, or any experiences/stories unique to them
    • The relationship of each family member with you.
  • Phone numbers, home address, or email address of family members to contact.
    • Add friends of the family to your contact list. They may be able to fill in gaps or share memories of family members.
  • A calendar. Let today be the day you begin your project, and plot out dates when you plan to contact family members and friends.
  • Pictures. Find pictures or images of family members that you tag with a description including names, dates, locations, etc. and insert onto the pages of family members.

My grandparents, Konstancija and Jurgis, and Marija and Feliksas.

Now it’s time to build your LIFELONG Family Story. Start connecting with family and friends by phone, email, video chat, or mail to build your LIFELONG Family Story.
